Serving Our Community

Please call the church office if you would like to help out in any of our community outreach ministries. It takes many hands to do God's work!

Goosetown Operation Backpack Program Zion Lutheran Church has partnered with our neighborhood school, Horace Mann Elementary to provide weekly food packs for the children who are eligible for the free and reduced lunch program. To bring this program to Horace Mann, Zion Lutheran works with the HACAP Food Reservoir in Hiawatha and staff at Horace Mann School. Volunteers are needed to pick up food orders at HACAP, and organize food for distribution to the families.
Free Lunch
Program

We prepare and serve meals for the Free Lunch Program to people in need on the second Monday of each month.  We're famous for our spaghetti and homemade desserts. The lunch is prepared in the Zion kitchen, and served in the Free Lunch Dining Room, 1105 South Gilbert Court, Iowa City. Through the collaborative efforts of many religious and community groups, the Free Lunch Programs serves lunch to all those in need 364 days each year. Call the church office to volunteer! We can use Sunday cooks and Monday servers.

CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank Zion supports the CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank by collecting food and other items, such as baby diapers and formula in a designated shopping cart near the worship space. We encourage our members to bring donations whenever they come to participate in church activities, and we hold additional food drives every year. Financial contributions for CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank may be dropped off at the Zion office at any time.

NAMI Walk

The annual Johnson County NAMI Walk is a fun way to meet new friends while enjoying the outdoors and raising money for a great cause. Zion members of all ages are encouraged to participate. Held in the spring each year, the 3-mile NAMI Walk at Terry Trueblood Recreation Center raises monetary contributions to fund NAMI of Johnson County's many services and programs for those affected by mental illness.  Bring your friends and join us. We always have a good time, rain or shine. Zion's NAMI Walk team is organized by our Mental Health Ministry Team. Call the office to find out how to join this active ministry team.

CROP Walk

The annual Johnson County CROP Hunger Walk is a popular fundraising and fresh air activity for Zion members of all ages.  Held every spring, the 3-mile CROP Walk raises monetary contributions to help alleviate hunger in our own community, and throughout the world. Bring your friends and join us. We always have a good time, even when it rains! Half of the funds rasied support the CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank, and the other half is given to Church World Service, a non-profit that fights hunger around the world.

Habitat
for
Humanity

Zion members team up with other community and faith organizations to help build affordable housing, working with Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity.  We welcome others to help raise funds and raise the walls of a new home! To add your muscle or financial support, call the church office.

Shelter
House
Zion is a supporter of Shelter House, which provides safe shelter, job training and meals to men, women, and children. Shelter House, which is staffed 7 days a week, offers temporary housing and supportive services that help individuals and families make the transition to more stable, productive lives. Zion members helped facilitate the opening of the original Shelter House in 1983, and our members continue to be actively involved as board members and volunteers.
